(b) determining the amount of adiponectin and the amount of leptin in the sample;\n
(c) calculating a ratio of the amount of adiponectin and the amount of leptin in the sample;\n
(d) correlating the ratio with the presence of type 1 diabetes or type 2 diabetes;\n
(e) diagnosing either type 1 or type 2 diabetes; and\n
(f) based on the diagnosis of step (e), treating the patient for either type 1 or type 2 diabetes, wherein a ratio of the amount of adiponectin in micrograms/ml to the amount of leptin in nanograms/ml in the sample equaling less than approximately 0.9 is indicative of type 2 diabetes in the subject; and\n
